Angel Oak's ESOL Teachers
Mrs. Leslie Carpenter Mrs. Kristin Craft
ESOL is an acronym that stands for “English for Speakers of Other Languages.” We use information from students’ home language surveys to identify students that speak a language other than English in their homes. Then, we screen these students using the W-APT in order to assess if these students require additional services to help them excel in school. Students that qualify receive small-group services focusing on reading, writing, listening, and speaking instruction in English in order to help students with Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP). Each spring, students in the ESOL program are assessed using the WIDA ACCESS English Proficiency Assessment in order to determine their status within the program, either continuing to receive services or exiting the program due to full proficiency in English.
We learn to read and write!
In our instruction, we focus on providing experiences that build background knowledge that students from different language backgrounds may not possess that their English-speaking peers may. We use a variety of strategies in order to build understanding and language proficiency, including hands-on activities, manipulatives, sentence frames, presentations, reports, graphic organizers, realia, Total Physical Response (TPR) activities, group work, and more.
Our students bring welcomed diversity to Angel Oak that allows other students to learn from their backgrounds as well, contributing to a positive school culture of acceptance. We embrace our bilingual students and encourage their growth in their home language as well as English!
