From the Principal

I am excited to report Angel Oak Elementary is the recipient of the Silver Palmetto Award for student achievement. This award is given annually by the South Carolina State Department of Education. Our students and teachers have focused on improving student achievement and this award is a tribute to their efforts. We have completed the spring MAP testing and several students were recognized with silicon bracelets for meeting their RIT goal in reading, math and/or science. This goal was established in the fall after the first MAP testing for this school year. I am very proud of these students. Interim reports are being sent home this week. Please review this report with your child. As already noted, there will be no summer school this year. Please conference with your child on their success and/or areas of improvement if needed. Our teachers are available for conferences.
April was a busy month at Angel Oak Elementary. The month began with our quarterly PBIS celebration. Students with no office referrals for the third quarter were treated to a movie with popcorn and ice pops. We also celebrated our students’ academic success during our third quarter Academic Awards ceremonies for grades first- fifth. Students received coupons to use at McDonalds and CiCis Pizzeria. Students with all A’s were treated to an ice cream party. Our fifth and second grade students were entertained by story teller Tim Lowry as he brought their social studies standards to life through his engaging stories. Thank you Dads or Grandfathers for your support in attending the Donuts for Dads morning event. Please reread the book your student selected to take home. Students may count this book toward their twenty-five Reading Carnival book count. I hope you were able to attend the Angel Oak Idols talent show. The performances were fantastic. The time students and Ms. Bridges dedicated practicing for this event was evident as our talented students performed for the audience. The month ended with our grade level Spelling Bee. Students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade competed for the grade level title of first place. Please refer to the attached calendar for the events to be held in May.
This week is Teacher Appreciation week. Students please write a note to your teacher thanking them for their dedication and work in helping all of our students reach their APEX. Please give the note to your teacher on Wednesday. Next week is PASS testing for grades three through five. Please be sure your child gets enough rest and arrives to school on time to get breakfast. Students can enter the building at 7:55 AM. Breakfast ends at 8:15 and all students should be in their homeroom at 8:16 or will be marked tardy. This is the last edition of “The Oak Connection” for this school year. I hope this tool has helped to increase the communication between school and home. I look forward to seeing our parents, families and community members at our end of the year award ceremonies. Thank you for letting the staff of Angel Oak Elementary School, in partnership with you, educate our children toward reaching their APEX. Have a wonderful summer.
